Solar
Longhorn Racing Solar (LHRS) designs and builds a solar-powered vehicle to compete in the Formula Sun Grand Prix, an endurance race where teams aim to complete as many laps as possible using only solar power. The event also serves as a qualifier for the biennial cross-country race, the American Solar Challenge. As a result of our vehicle’s large size and manufacturing lead times, we have build cycles of 2-3 years.
Our electrical systems (Vehicle Controls & Telemetry, Power Systems, Power Generation) focus on embedded and power systems, developing custom circuit boards, wire harnessing and system monitoring to optimize energy use and solar output. Our mechanical systems (Aerodynamics, Body, Composites, Dynamics, Powertrain) design & validate all mechanical components with the goal of minimizing the car’s weight, rolling resistance, and aerodynamic drag. The operations team manages Public Relations, Treasury, and Corporate Relations.
This year, manufacturing begins on our next-gen vehicle. Workdays are Saturdays from 9:30AM to 6PM at both PRC and ETC, with ongoing work and regular meetings throughout the week.
Above all else, our goal is to use this unique challenge to build another generation of talented engineers. Interested recruits can apply and interview for multiple systems.
